I think back to the old days (30-plus years ago) and remember seeing everyone wearing a coat or Mac in winter, walking to and from work. In those days the department stores boasted a huge choice in winter coats. I have asked myself what has changed?
Years ago people walked to the tram (the old W class trams had canvas blinds), the train, or bus stop. We waited patiently in the cold and wet winter days, when we traveled on those modes of transport. It was cold: we didn’t travel in air-conditioned and heated comfort.
Even our cars had to be ‘warmed up’ and de-iced in the morning. Usually the man of the house would be seen rugged-up in coat, scarf and gloves fettling the choke and revving the engine to bring it to a temperature where the heating and demisting would work.
Nowadays people are in utter despair if their temperature controlled office or home is not at the ideal orchid-growing climate that they have set remotely from their phone app.
So, with the rapid change in lifestyle and in an age where the car in the garage inside people’s houses effortlessly glides them in shirtsleeves to their underground car parks at work, there is little need for a heavy overcoat.
Or is there?
Today Tolley Savile Row sells overcoats in lighter weights, often referred to as car coats, that are made from technical fabrics that breath, yet are wind- and rain-proof.
A smart blouson or pea coat is an ideal alternative to the traditional overcoat as it can be worn over a suit or sports coat, and is ideal for the weekend wardrobe.
For the past couple of winters Tolley Savile Row has had amazing success with coats, as they look very on-trend and are perfect for traveling. Our best sellers are reversible thigh length coats that are made in Italy and England by specialist coat-makers. These coats can be folded into a small pillow size and packed in hand luggage or a briefcase, yet are rain- and wind-proof.
Our first delivery of these coats has been in store only two weeks and 50 percent of them have sold already. Another shipment will be in store shortly.
Tolley Savile Row will feature all of its coats on Instagram, Facebook, and on our website, in the new Look of the Week.
If our clients require something different, we will make it. As the only true London Savile Row bespoke tailor in Australia, any request can be accommodated. Maybe a pure Scottish cashmere car coat or a tweed pea coat? Or if Sir requires a new hunting pink or harriers’ green?
